What the life stages mean
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines use four age-related stages: kitten from birth to 1 year, young adult from 1 through 6 years, mature adult from 7 through 10 years, and senior over 10 years. These groups are useful for discussing changing care needs, but every cat is an individual.
About the human-age estimate
The human-age figure here is only a familiar comparison, not a medical conversion. It uses the common rule of roughly 15 human years for the first cat year, 24 by age two, then about four human years for each additional cat year.
Age alone does not determine health. Weight, mobility, teeth, appetite, thirst, behaviour, lifestyle and medical history all matter. Discuss changes with your veterinarian rather than relying on a calculator.
